Wayfair, checked: cheap to buy, not always cheap to send back

Wayfair is a good place to buy furniture and decor if you know what you want and you’re sure it fits. Shipping is free over $35 and prices drop hard during Way Day. Returns are the weak spot: the return shipping cost comes out of your refund, and on a sofa or bed frame that can wipe out the discount you chased.

Wayfair savings
Orders of $35 or more ship free in the contiguous U.S., large furniture included. Under $35 you pay a flat $4.99. Some items, like flooring, carry their own shipping charge.
Paid members earn 5% back in rewards on every order, get free shipping with no minimum, and shop Way Day early. It also works at AllModern, Birch Lane, Joss & Main and Perigold.
Wayfair’s biggest sale runs twice a year, in late April and in October. The spring 2026 event ran April 25–27 with free shipping sitewide. Fall dates are usually announced about 10 days ahead.
Returned items are inspected and resold at a discount. The savings are real, but most Open Box and clearance items can’t be returned, so only buy what you’ve measured for.
Cardholders get Rewards membership free and earn 7% back instead of 5%. The purchase APR was about 30–33% in late 2025, so it only pays if you clear the balance every month.

Returns: the real cost of changing your mind
Most items can go back within 30 days of delivery, in original condition. If it arrived unassembled, it has to go back unassembled. Wayfair gives you a prepaid label, then takes the return shipping cost out of your refund unless the item arrived damaged or wrong.
On a lamp that deduction is small. On a sectional or a king bed frame, reviewers have reported $50 to well over $100. Wayfair shows the fee when you start the return, so check it before you confirm. If something arrives broken, report it through the order page right away. Wayfair covers those returns or sends replacement parts.
When to buy: Way Day and member sales
Way Day is Wayfair’s version of Prime Day. It runs in late April and again in October, with daily deals in the week before. Rewards members get in a day or two early, which matters for popular sofas and rugs that sell out.
Wayfair doesn’t match other stores’ prices, and it doesn’t promise a refund if the price drops after you buy. If a big piece drops within your 30 days, ask support. If they say no, returning and rebuying only makes sense when the drop is bigger than the return shipping fee.
Is Wayfair Rewards worth $29?
You earn 5% back in rewards, so the fee pays for itself at about $580 in spending a year. One sofa gets you there. You also get free shipping with no minimum, a birthday offer, and early access to sales.
Rewards don’t expire while your membership is active, and the fee auto-renews each year. If you’re buying one rug and done, skip it and just get your cart over $35.
